Empowering the Patient: Ridge Family Practice
Jennifer Kay, MD, physician owner of Ridge Family Practice, PC, a family clinic in Council Bluffs, IA, likens a paper medical record to handcuffs, restricting what she's able to do. Kay says, "It keeps you in the office longer hours, not allowing you to have your data nicely organized, not allowing you to access it easily." However, the practice has found the key to unlock the paper record handcuffs.
The practice uses an EHR system to increase efficiency, enhance patient safety and decrease error. Patients have also embraced using a secure online portal that allows them to access their lab results and medications, empowering them to take a more active role in their care. As Tim Klemme, clinic administrator, states, “We advocate for the patient, but invite the patient to advocate for themselves through the portal.”
In addition to the patient care benefits, Ridge Family Practice is realizing financial gains as well. The system saved the practice $41,000 in transcriptions cost in the first year of implementation, and the practice sees an annual savings of $3,000 in chart storage fees.
