Driving engagement in personal health

Kansas City is feeling the weight (or lack thereof) of healthier lifestyles and happier citizens. Through the KC Slimdown Challenge, nearly 10,000 people worked together to lose 38,187 pounds. In the Community Challenge, players weighing out lost an impressive average of 9.7 pounds per player and 28% moved to a better BMI category, quite a feat for a ten week competition! The estimated cost savings to KC through this initiative is a stunning $1.5 million.

Realizing the Potential of Electronic Health Records

 On November 22, Cerner was featured in a Kansas City Star article about health and nutrition in the workplace:...Perhaps no company nationally has pushed further to tie food service to employee health than Cerner.Even the arrangement of the chip rack in Cerner’s cafeteria is telling: Healthier baked chips get the top rack; fattier fried snacks are put at ankle height.Also, the company, which has restyled itself from a technology firm to a health care company, is sponsoring a “Slimdown Throwdown” contest to encourage employee teams to lose weight. The prize will be an expenses-paid vacation for the winning team.

The study was conducted over a number of years and involved more than 20,000 people. It is absolutely solid and actionable, in terms of readiness to put into practice.Changes in lifestyle, including excessive caloric intake and insufficient exercise, have caused a dramatic increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity.
