Google just turned 13 years old (9/27/1998), and I feel old. I remember toiling away as an undergrad in the engineering computer lab, using NCSA’s Mosaic as my browser and AltaVista as my main search engine. EMRs were barely there, paper was everywhere. The big movement in all parts of health care IT at the time was “get the data into the computer,” and all of those printouts, paper charts, and the like slowly migrated into an electronic format.

There they were. My new glasses, sitting on the floor, chewed up by a tough-looking pug who didn't care. Worse, I had a schedule full of meetings the next day and didn't have a spare pair of glasses. The next afternoon, I went to a local one-hour glasses shop in my prescription sunglasses and asked them to have my eyeglass prescription faxed from my optometrist so we could get new glasses started. That's when the fun began.

Yogi Berra once famously said, “The future ain’t what it used to be.” Turns out, Yogi was right, especially in healthcare. The future hospital won’t only be different, it will also be smarter. Proof of that can be seen on the NCH North Naples campus, where we’ve created — with our Cerner Corporation partners — a prototype hospital room of the future. With philanthropic support, it could soon be the technologically-savvy setting that is representative of NCH hospital rooms.

The ability for businesses in rural areas to send and receive information as quickly as their urban counterparts is vital to their continued sustainability and ultimately to the livelihood of their communities. But it’s not just about businesses; it’s about improving access to education and healthcare as well.

On the morning of Nov. 19, 2010 the FDA announced the widespread recall of the popular pain relief medication, Darvocet, citing “serious and potentially fatal heart rhythm abnormalities.” Ensuring that the doctors who use our electronic health record (EHR) were aware of the Darvocet recall quickly became our highest priority that day.
