Medical Device Certification

  • CareAware and its core, the CareAware iBus®, have changed the way health care organizations think about medical device interoperability.

For over 30 years, Cerner has connected medical devices to the electronic health record (EHR). It began in the laboratory with medical device interfaces (MDI) and expanded into bedside medical device interfaces (BMDI) and beyond.

In 2007 Cerner introduced CareAware®, a suite of solutions that enables any area of a hospital to create an environment where all devices are integrated and contextually aware to ensure the right data is presented in the right format at the right time.

Cerner introduced the Certification Program for Medical Devices to create a partnership between Cerner and the manufacturer. The program establishes:

    • A best practice to integrate device data with the CareAware iBus
    • Release coordination to ensure the latest software and protocols are tested and available
    • An active relationship that can include joint development roadmaps and a single support channel

The success of this program continues and so does the alignment with our partners. Cerner has taken the next turn, going beyond connectivity to demand devices perform in the context of clinical workflow. The Workflow Certification seal of approval:

    • Adds a layer of assurance that the device performs in the context of the clinical solution
    • Provides transparency to ensure organizations invest in a comprehensive offering
    • Establishes criteria needed to enable devices to interoperate with CareAware solutions
