Realizing the Potential of Electronic Health Records

The United States is entering a new era of health care, driven by the implementation of health information technology, specifically the electronic health record (EHR). The adoption of EHRs offers tremendous potential to improve the quality of patient care, improving patient outcomes as well as increasing the efficiency of the health care system in the United States. This technology also empowers individuals to take more control of their health by eliminating the paper chart and enabling them to have more direct interaction with their personal health information.

This video from the ONC, featuring Dr. Farzad Mostashari, Dr. David Blumenthal and others, highlights the positive impact EHR adoption can have on patient care.

As a RN with Cerner EMR implementation experience I have seen first hand the benefits of electronic health records. I believe this is the best way to increase quality of care and decrease medical cost. As a nurse I love the idea that with EMR medication transcription is a thing of the past. Physicians have told me that they enjoy being able to customize order sets and order plans. I have implemented EMR in two different type of organizations. In both cases there were initial push back from staff adopting the software. It took EMR trained clinical professionals such as nurses and physicians to get staff to see the benefits of using an electronic system. As I taught classes on how to use electronic charting and order entry I enjoyed seeing staff buy into doing away with paper charting. Electronic medical records has created new challenges but is far better than dealing with paper charts.
